John Wesley Powell

Powell2

John Wesley Powell led two Powell Expeditions down the Green and Colorado Rivers. A Civil War veteran, he didn’t let the loss of his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh slow him down. He ran the rivers in an armchair strapped to his wooden boat.  An academic and an adventurer he went on to become the first director of the USGS and helped found the National Geographic Society.
